Hawaiian Mission Houses and O‘ahu Cemetery are happy to welcome you to the 10th Anniversary performance of Cemetery Pupu Theatre! For 10 years we have partnered to bring history to life by using primary source materials in the Hawaiian Mission Houses Archives and beyond, to share the lives of people who created Hawai‘i’s history, including many who are buried at O‘ahu Cemetery.
“A Decade of Living History” features five beloved portrayals from the past ten years, selected also to show the breadth and diversity of our repertoire of over 55 portrayals. Featured this year are:
Mary Dowsett, whose story brings to life the hazards of early trade and shipping in Hawai‘i
Hali‘a, a composite character drawn on firsthand accounts of the 1853 smallpox epidemic
Curtis Iaukea, public servant to Hawai‘i across decades, under the Kingdom, Republic, and Territory
Cherilla Lowrey, who was involved with developing the modern Honolulu landscape and preserving the environment
David Malo, a formative educator and public servant to his Hawai‘i Nei
This year, enjoy the performance in two ways:
Online, virtual performance- Your ticket gets you a link to watch the five portrayals, which have been pre-recorded at O‘ahu Cemetery and then professionally edited. You may open the link anytime from June 11-26, and stop, start, and rewatch as often as you would like. For the “Pupu” part of Cemetery Pupu Theatere, enjoy recipes from cookbooks in our archives! (Recipes will be posted soon…)
In-Person performance- We are thrilled to be back at O‘ahu Cemetery this year! Seating will be limited and COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed. Your ticket includes bento box dinner and 2 drinks, as well as the open-air performances with Question and Answer after for those who would like to stay.
