Valentine's Day Special

Mission Houses Museum Trunk Show

February 13, 2010

Get a jump on Valentine's Day by visiting the Mission Houses Museum store on Saturday, February 13, for a trunk show featuring local fine artist Cora Yee, whose work has been exhibited in many venues in Hawai'i including the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Hawai'i State Art Museum.  Yee, who is known for her colorful prints and eclectic jewelry, will have a variety of jewelry, clothing and art work available for purchase.

The Mission Houses Museum Cafe and Tea Parlor will be featuring a special tea menu for the day and music will be provided by local jazz guitarist Shoji Ledward, whose 1997 album, "Live at the Contemporary Cafe" was a Na Hoku Hanohano nominee for best jazz album that year.  Ledward also is on the music faculty at Punahou School.  Time: 11:30 am to 2:30 pm., Admission: FREE. 553 S. FURLOUGH FRIDAYS

For Teachers: It’s your day at the museum! All Hawaii teachers are welcome to visit Mission Houses Museum for a FREE tour and enjoy 10% off in the Museum Store and Café and Tea Parlor. Explore 19th century Hawaii and discover how our school programs address the standards you teach. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with tours at 11 a.m. 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.  Please bring your ID. 

For Children: Listening to the Past - What will you hear when you listen to the stories of the past? What if buildings could talk? Make the past come alive for your keiki at the Mission Houses Museum! Listen to the stories of the New England Protestant Missionaries inside of our Frame House from 1821 and at the Mission Cemetery where many of them still reside. Monthly, 1st Tuesday at Noon. Free

Bring a bag lunch or purchase something from the Museum Café and Tea Parlor then listen to the lunch-time lecture.

Historic Architect Spencer Leineweber discusses her research on the construction of the Frame House, Hawai`i’s oldest wooden structure.

Returning to Hawai`i

Mission Houses Museum's own Mike Smola discusses the four Hawaiian youth who accompanied the pioneer company of missionaries to Hawai`i on board the Thaddeus.

 

April 6

Historic Houses bringing History to Life

The first historic house in the United States opened to the public in the mid-nineteenth century.  Join Curator Elizabeth Nosek as she discusses the history of these national treasures both on the mainland and here in Hawai`i.

 

May 4

Desoto Brown joins us to discuss the development of Hawai`i’s fantasy image via advertising and promotion for tourism and other commercial purposes. This process which began in the late 1800s had a huge impact on how Hawai`i is viewed today.

 

June 1

Gifts of the Ali`i in Today’s Hawai`i

Bob Sigall joins us once more to share stories of the lasting institutions Hawai`i’s beloved monarchy


 

Keiki Talk Story 

Monthly, 2nd Saturday from 10 to 11 am.  Free

Children and one of their adult ohana hear a themed story before participating in a fun activity exploring the museum’s collection each month in the historic Frame House cellar.  Perfect for children 3 years and up.

Aloha to You

Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to explore the meaning of this special Hawaiian word.  Join us at Mission Houses Museum as we explore objects from our collection and hear stories to better understand Hawai`i’s Aloha.

Stories of the Past

Children’s author, Tomie de Poala is famous for his books on folktales and history.  Join us for a special story time devoted to his work.

Hawaiian Stories

Hawai`i’s own Tammy Yee visits the Mission Houses to present a special story time for our visitors.

May Day is Lei Day

Celebrate spring with stories all about spring and flowers before making a special lei to take home.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Mission Houses Museum, located in Honolulu’s Historic Capitol District, features two original 19th century Congregational missionary houses, a print shop, hundreds of missionary artifacts such as furniture, clothing, cookware, toys and games, paintings and drawings, and a contemporary gallery for changing exhibitions. Open Tuesdays – Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission $10 general, $8 kama‘aina, seniors and military, $6 students. Guided tours available.  (808) 447-3910.
