Take
a family tour, hear a story, try out historical activities, or make
something to take home. Each month on Kamaaina Family Day, the Mission
Houses Museum offers a themed experience for everyone in the family.
Activities from 10:00-3:00 p.m. with story time at 12:30 p.m. Half
price admission for tours and activities; $2.00 for activities only,
tour not included.
October 30: Chicken Skin Stories
November 27: A Time to Give Thanks and Malama our Land and Friends
December 18: A Circle of Ethnic Holidays
TALKING STORY: MYTH, LEGEND, AND FABLES
People
throughout the world have told stories to help them understand their
world, to memorialize heroes or heroic places and events, and to help
teach morals and cultural roles and expectations to their children.
Beginning in the fall of 2010, Mission Houses Museum will explore
stories from around the world that embody universal themes or characters
and link them to traditional Hawaiian stories and to those who told or
gathered them. A series of Historic Bites Noon lectures, and evening
lectures will introduce this interesting and lively subject.

First Tuesday of each month, 12:00 p.m. Free
Bring a bag lunch or purchase something from the Museum Café and Tea
Parlor
then listen to the lunch-time lecture.

Stories: An Overview of Stories, Storytelling and TheirPlace in Our Lives
Senior
Curator Elizabeth Nosek introduces the place storieshave in our lives
both past and present using local legends, objects from themuseum
collection, and myths shared by diverse cultures.
October 5
An Introduction to Victorian Horrors
Explore
the history of Victorian Horrors or Gothic fictionbefore meeting one of
the actors who will bring a historic author to life at themuseum's
October 22nd program Victorian Horrors.
November 2
Legends of MissionHouses
Hear
some of the interesting, strange, and amazing tales ofthe people who
lived, worked, and visited the Honolulu Mission Station.
December 7
Christmas in Hawai'i
Author Bob Sigall explores the tales of how this holiday gotits start in Hawai'i.

DOCENT TRAINING AT MISSION HOUSES MUSEUM
Mission
Houses is looking for volunteers who want to help visitors and
Kama‘aina alike develop a better understanding of Hawaiian history.
Docents are especially needed to give tours of the historic Frame House,
Print Shop and grounds. Choose from one of two sessions being offered:
Session 1: Two Thursdays, August 5 & 12 from 10 am to 1 pm
Session 2: Two Saturdays, August 7 & 14 from 10 am to 1 pm

LAUHALA WEAVING DEMONSTRATIONS
Every 1st Saturday of the month, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free
Members
of the Lauhala Weaving Hui gather to weave and share information with
each other. Visitors are welcome to observe and ask questions about
this important Polynesian craft.

three historic buildings helps museum visitors discover how a small
group of New England missionaries – who came to the islands in 1820 –
worked with the Native Hawaiians to introduce Christianity, to develop a
written language, public education, western medicine, and
representative government.
