Alphabet Soup: Literacy, Language & Learning
(February 13 – June 23, 2009)
Alphabet Soup: Literacy, Language & Learning is a celebration of
literacy in
Hawaii
. This special exhibition and related programs will explore the
development of the Hawaiian culture and its language in print through
three diverse sections. The
first will explore the vital role that 19th century New England missionaries played in Hawai‘i for developing, teaching and making available a Hawaiian written language for the first time. Next, it will help to dispel myths and misconceptions that have evolved on this subject matter over the years. And lastly, it will demonstrate the importance of retaining and encouraging the use of the Hawaiian language in today's modern world. We will showcase the works of some authors of both adult
and children's books who, over time, have chosen
Hawaii
as their theme. With special emphasis on the importance
of literacy as well as collectible one-of-a-kind books, diaries and art objects
utilizing the printed word in their creation, the project will be designed to
engage public and private schools with meaningful and engaging curricula for
teachers and students.
